LOUISIANA/MISSISSIPPI-KATRINA AKITAS- PLEASE HELP US FIND THIS AKITA!!!
HELP CANDY GET HOME!!! Janis Callahan in Birmingham, Ala, 205 994 5858 is trying to help Jason Hurst find his Akita Candy. Jason lived at 5001 Columbia Street in the Ponchatrain Park subdivision in the upper 9th ward. He is a quadraplegic, who is currently in a hospital in Dallas, TX. His family is scattered everywhere and there is nothing left of his home. His dog 5 year old Akita is his best friend and we know that she survived the flood. Candy is micochipped with Home Again. Jason has already
updated his contact information with them. She was wearing a black
nylon collar with her rabies tags, her license, and a yellow tag containing
her "Home Again" microchip number, along with an 800 number
to contact Home Again. We are searching websites for her. If you find her on one, please notify Janis by phone or me sherry@sherob.com so we can get this pair back together. THESE GUYS NEED TO FIND THEIR OWNERS!!!! So many Akitas are homeless as a result of Katrina and Rita. Undoubtedly, some of these dogs have owners looking for them but they have been scattered across the country, and although people are told to look on Petfinders (www.petfinders.com), the dogs may not be listed there or may be listed with a shelter elsewhere. Why? So many dogs were brought out of New Orleans and the surrounding parishes that there just wasn't anywhere to contain them. The State of Louisiana's Dept. of Agriculture had very real concerns though that their owners would want them back, so at first they were very reluctant to let them leave the state. Eventually, even they had to recognize that the numbers were just too large, so they began a cooperative effort with the LaSPCA and SPCAs across the country. The dogs were shipped to participating shelters with the proviso that they would be kept for a reasonable time period and then released for adoption if they were not reclaimed. The shelters are really unable to accommodate so many dogs, so they have begun releasing them to foster homes. Owners can reclaim their dogs and get assistance in having them returned. Those that are not reclaimed will be available for adoption in the next couple of months. In case people are looking for these dogs, they are listed on many Akita Rescue sites, ours among them. Here are some of the dogs and information about where they can be found.
She was found on Chef Menteur Hwy, New Orleans, LA
KIKI--Kiki was sent to the Marin Co. SPCA in the San Francisco area. She is now being fostered by Linda Wroth. If she is not reclaimed by her owner, she will be available for adoption in December. Rescuers found her in New Orleans, La.
We brought this boy back from New Orleans last weekend.
He is lonely and missing his owner. He is a male Akita, no tags, possibly
around 10 years old. We did not rescue him ourselves but on his paperwork
was the address 1326 Mazante. Please email me
danakay2@aol.com with any information TEXAS--THESE GUYS NEED NEW HOMES!!! TRISTAN
Helen was undeterred. She just kept calling, pleading this dog's case unti finally, we gave up and agreed to meet her to get him. When Sherry picked him up, he was very thin and covered with ticks. Helen had put Frontline Plus on him, but it probably only killed the first layer! Because he came from an animal control facility, we put him in isolation at Brittmoore Animal Clinic. They treated him for a tick-bourne disease called ehrlichia as well. Untreated, this can be fatal. Of coure, poor Tristan had heartworms, so we treated him for that as well. In between, he got all his vaccinations and was neutered. One of the veterinarians there called to say that Tristan was really a special dog and deserved a chance at life. He said he could see why someone would work so hard to save him. Other people on the staff also remarked at how much they liked him. As you can see, Tristan is a black, brindle pinto. He's also not young, but now he's in reasonably good health and is ready to go to a home. Please don't call about him if you have children or other pets. He needs to be with people who can give him the life he should have had but didn't.
What's Cosmo looking for? A new home for the rest of his life. Cosmo's original owner died tragically, and a Good Samaritan took him in, planning to keep him. Unforunately, he has one dog too many for his neighborhood association and now he has to place this youngster. Cosmo's just over a year old. He's neutered, on heartworm preventative, and has had his vaccinations. He's a sweetheart, living in a house with other dogs and a bunch of kids. We'd prefer not placing him in a home with young children (under 12).
If you are interested
in one of these dogs, we ask that you complete an adoption
application. For any questions or additional information, please call
Sherry Wallis at 713-465-9729, email sherry@sherob.com for information
on any of the above mentioned rescues.
